Memorial service – a day of remembrance

The Christchurch City Council together with the New Zealand Government is holding a National Christchurch Memorial Service at North Hagley Park from 12pm this Friday 18 March to pay respect to the lives lost in the devastating February 22 earthquake.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says the memorial service and public holiday provides an important time of remembrance and a chance for the local people of Christchurch to take a day out to reflect on the past few weeks.

“But it won’t just be a day for Christchurch people. The service will be broadcast live on television and radio, offering the chance for all New Zealanders to pause, reflect and grieve in any way they need to.”

VIPs will be in attendance including, HRH Prince William, Prime Minister John Key, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, other dignitaries and well known Kiwi performers.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the memorial service and planning is underway to ensure people get to Hagley Park and home again as safely and easily as possible.

Organisers are advising residents to consider their method of transport and to allow ample travel time due to traffic congestion.

Biking or walking to the Park is encouraged and limited bike racks will be provided. There will also be two car parking areas, as well as taxi and drop off points arranged.

Free buses will be running throughout the day to and from the event. Visit www.metroinfo.co.nz for timetable and route information.

Music will play from 10:30am in the lead up to the service, with Ngāi Tūāhuriri opening the memorial service proceedings. The service will finish around 2:30pm with more music to follow until 3:30pm.

Large movable toilet blocks will be available at the service for public use.  These would not be suitable within communities badly effected by the earthquake.

Drinking water stations, St Johns first aid and welfare services will be on site. Residents are asked to bring a picnic lunch, drinking water and a rug to sit on.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited at the event and there will be plenty of security on site to ensure public safety is a top priority.

Prime Minister John Key has announced that 18 March 2011 is a provincial holiday, so the people of Canterbury can attend the National Christchurch Memorial Service.

“While we will never forget those who have been lost, we must now focus that indomitable Canterbury spirit on the future,” says Mr Key.

The memorial service will go ahead rain or shine. You can get more information on how to get to and from the event and what to bring here.
