Cordon Reduction – Zone 6, and south-east corner of Red Zone

CERA media release: Wednesday 1 June 2011

The cordon will be further reduced this week with further areas being opened to the general public from 5pm Friday 3 June.

In the north-west of Zone 6 the reduction will allow one-way access running south down Colombo Street (access from Peterborough), to Kilmore Street, and turning right into one-way access running west along Kilmore Street to Victoria Street.

The area is able to be opened as demolitions were completed on Colombo Street between Kilmore Street and Peterborough Street. This means that one-way access south in a section of Colombo Street will be opened. Works to stabilise buildings in the area resulted in a reduction in drop zones, making it safe for the public to move through the area.

Opening the area will allow the public to access a cluster of businesses.

A small triangular section will also open in the south-east of the Red Zone. There will be one way access west along Tuam Street (access from Madras), and then a left turn into High Street will allow one-way access connecting to St Asaph Street.

Opening this section is possible because there has been a reduction in heavy vehicles moving through this area making it suitable for public access.

Cordon Reduction – section of Zone 6

Cordon reduction continues this week.

A section of Zone 6 will open on Friday 27 May from 12.00 noon.

The area encompasses a section of Peterborough Street between Manchester Street and Madras Street.

Manchester Street is open for a section south of Peterborough but is closed at Cambridge Terrace.

Cambridge Terrace opens to the east of Manchester Street. Kilmore Street has opened from Manchester Street to Madras Street. Access on Kilmore Street between Madras Street and Barbadoes Street remains restricted because of Fire Service operations.

The area is being opened so that residents living in homes with green placards are able to move through the area without carrying identification. The completion of debris clearance from the Pyne Gould Building, and from demolition sites north of the Red Zone in Colombo Street, means that large volumes of heavy traffic have also reduced.

People moving through the newly opened area should remain aware that demolitions are ongoing and some heavy vehicles will continue to be present.
